About the Event

Online philosophy class for all ages and abilities from everywhere - with home educated children in mind.  Classes are an hour long, held on Zoom. Each session explores a different theme and there are new themes every month. Participants grow in their competence and confidence as thinkers and speakers, and enjoy connecting to one another, with opportunities for deep thinking and disagreement about juicy, debatable questions.

You can book a block of four sessions for £25, or individual taster sessions for £7 each. There are lots of different time slots, with separate classes for 9-12s and for teens. For participants aged 6-8, try Philosophy Explorers, our interactive philosophical story-telling adventure.

Week 1 - Stoicism

A "stoic" attitude has come to mean putting up with suffering without complaining. But the ancient philosophy of stoicism has much more to it than that. The stoics explored what in life and thought you can control, and what your attitude should be to the things you can't. This hour will be spent in the company of Roman emperor-philosopher Marcus Aurelius and others ancient and modern. How stoical are you? How stoical should you be?

Week 2 - The Daily Philosopher

This week, we'll use the news and mine the stories of the week (rather than the week's twist on the ongoing stories that we are all fed up of hearing about). We'll also look at some of the ethical dilemmas journalists have faced and consider the ethics of story selection and censorship.

Week 3 - Winged

Using a brilliant thought experiment by Vivian Cox about worlds in which few, some, or most people can fly, and perspectives from philosophers and activists with disabilities, this session explores the philosophy and history of disability. Is disability in the body (or mind) or in society?

Week 4 - What is truth? Stay for an answer.

If unlike Pontius Pilate you stayed for an answer to this one, you'd be staying for a very long time. Truth is one of those ideas we use all the time and think we understand, but which turns out to be more slippery than you imagine. We'll explore four different theories of what makes truth truth and see if any of them ring true, or that would be too good to be true.

Different times are available for different age groups.

Times shown are GMT.
