About the Event

Philosophy LATE for Adults

These sessions give you an insight into the sorts of things we look at in the classes (if you don't already eavesdrop!) They attract a mixture of parents, general-purpose curious adults and some teachers who are interested in doing philosophy with their own classes. Held fortnightly at the moment. It's a small, welcoming group. One participant described it as being like "mental pilates!"

December 1st - Hot Property

Buying, selling and owning stuff is an everyday part of life. But if you go back far enough in history, how did anyone come to own anything in the first place - or to own the first place to be owned? Is it finders keepers? What if other people have already found everything? Do other animals own things? We'll explore the contentious topic of property, or what can and should be owned, so that you can reach your own conclusions about ownership.

December 15th - New Year's Irresolutions

It's the time of year when millions of people resolve that this will be the year they get fit, spend more (or less!) time with their families, or learn Joobrinese. But like so many of our best intentions, many of these never happen. This session explores the ideas of temptation and weakness of will - the Greeks had a word for it, "akrasia". Why don't we always do as we should, when we could and wish we would? Or is each of us a "we" of our own, with different versions of ourselves competing to see who's the boss of me?

January 19th - What is truth? Stay for an answer

If unlike Pontius Pilate you stayed for an answer to this one, you'd be staying for a very long time. Truth is one of those ideas we use all the time and think we understand, but which turns out to be more slippery than you imagine. We'll explore four different theories of what makes truth truth and see if any of them ring true, or that would be too good to be true.
