***There will be spoilers in the discussion, so perhaps better not to attend if you are halfway through or thinking of reading it.*** 9-12s Book Club The Family from One End Street by Eve Garnett Thursday 26th May 4.30 p.m. Our new Book Club book is “The Family from One End Street” by Eve Garnett. It is the story of everyday life in the big, happy Ruggles family who live in the small town of Otwell. Father is a dustman and Mother a washerwoman. Then there's all the children - practical Lily Rose, clever Kate, mischievous twins James and John, followed by Jo, who loves films, little Peg and finally baby William. It’s a light, quick read. The stories are small-scale, but what made the book a big departure from most children’s books before or since is that this wasn’t about middle-class or wealthy children, but a very ordinary family struggling to make ends meet. The little details along the way give a better insight into life in another time (1938) than most histories you could read. Link to buy online while supporting your high street:
