Both a traditional fairy tale and daring new style of drama, The Winter’s Tale is one of Shakespeare’s experimental late plays. After the comedy of Much Ado and the tragedy of Othello, Shakespeare again returns to the subjects of miraculous resurrection and mistaken jealousy in this radical tragicomedy. King Leontes descends into madness, imprisons Queen Hermione, who dies along with the young prince, and the infant princess is abandoned in the wilderness. Sixteen years later, can his surviving daughter forgive and reconcile with her penitent father? This play’s unbelievable spectacle and mingling of jeopardy with high jinks is probably best summed up by its infamous stage direction: Exit, pursued by a bear. These practical and playful sessions explore Shakespeare’s timeless works. Running the gamut of human experience from tragic to comic, you’ll get to perform speeches and scenes, explore stories and history, and discuss the profound questions posed by a writer who might just be both the greatest and most popular of all time. Sessions are taught by professional actor Charlie Sturgeon, 2018 MA Acting (Classical) graduate of the Royal Central School of Speech & Drama, leading man of the Australian Shakespeare Company 2013-17 and of course host of our own improv and chatterbox courses.
