Shakespeare: The Two Noble Kinsmen In some ways a sequel to A Midsummer Night’s Dream, and written in the same tragicomic period as The Winter’s Tale, Shakespeare and Fletcher’s The Two Noble Kinsmen returns us to Theseus and Hippolyta in Athens, as well as to the intoxication of love at first sight and a fraught love triangle/quadrangle that turns friends into rivals. Based on Chaucer’s The Knight’s Tale, two best friends, knights at arms, are captured in battle and imprisoned by Theseus. From their window they see Hippolyta’s beautiful sister Emilia and both fall instantly in love with her, turning from intimate friendship to jealous rivalry in the space of a minute. Meanwhile, Emilia has little interest in them, doubting she could love any man as much as she loved her girlhood friend Flavina. One of the knights is released and gets lost in the woods of Athens, searching for a way to be near Emilia. When the jailer’s daughter frees the other, and follows him into the forest herself, the stage is set for absurd adventures and painful confusions in this bittersweet study of the strangeness of love. “‘Tis pity love should be so tyrannous.” These practical and playful sessions explore Shakespeare’s timeless works. Running the gamut of human experience from tragic to comic, you’ll get to perform speeches and scenes, explore stories and history, and discuss the profound questions posed by a writer who might just be both the greatest and most popular of all time. Sessions are taught by professional actor Charlie Sturgeon, 2018 MA Acting (Classical) graduate of the Royal Central School of Speech & Drama, leading man of the Australian Shakespeare Company 2013-17 and of course host of our own improv and chatterbox courses.
