Education Without started with a group of Essex teachers in the late 1970s with children who were exceptionally able and hungry for more than their schools could give them. When funding for that work was withdrawn, the teachers behind it didn't let it disappear - they built it into something independent. That became GIFT.

GIFT grew a reputation over the following decades for its residential weekends and summer schools: courses that took bright, curious young people seriously, giving them opportunities to learn and play together.

In the mid-2010s, GIFT passed to a new generation. Jason Buckley, who had guest-lectured with GIFT for years, took the organisation forward, inheriting a tradition that was already decades old, and built on it, bringing his own educational work into the fold: The Philosophy Man, Outspark, and his ongoing work in Philosophy for Children.

GIFTers began asking for some online sessions in the evening, so they could keep learning together in between residentials, so a few weekly classes were devised. In February 2020 a parent asked for something specifically for their home-educated child, and morning Philosophy session were born. Weeks later, the pandemic made online delivery the only option for almost everyone. What had been a small experiment became the foundation of something new: P4HE - Philosophy for Home Education.

P4HE grew well beyond its name,  providing over 30 hours of classes each week, covering art, creative writing, debate, drama and games, as well as philosophy and even a Duke of Edinburgh programme - the provision expanded class by class, family by family, and from mornings into afternoons and evenings.

GIFT residentials, paused through the pandemic, returned in 2023, and the two strands sat side by side: GIFT as the residential tradition, P4HE as the online, home-education-facing identity.

By 2026, that arrangement no longer fit what we'd become. "Philosophy for Home Education" described a fraction of what we actually offered. So we made the distinction explicit, and gave it a name that reflects what we believe: Education Without.

Education Without is now the umbrella for our online classes and our broader educational programme.

​

GIFT remains what it has always been - the residential tradition, tracing its origins back to those Essex teachers in the late 1970s. Together, they carry forward nearly fifty years of the same conviction: that bright, curious, differently-shaped young people deserve an education built around them, not one they have to squeeze themselves into.
