Four Week P4HE Course
Time & Location
About the Event
This is a philosphy class for children running in 4 week blocks.
Week 1. What Makes Soup Soup?
When does a soup become sauce? Does soup have to be served in a bowl? In this Philosophy Wranglers Homeschool session, we’ll move on from soup to more important concepts that are even harder to define – freedom, happiness, wisdom – wherever our search for the ingredients of what makes a something a something leads us. Also games and riddles to get participants thinking together.
Week 2. Self, Self, Self
This week’s P4HE sessions are all about you. We’ll take a tour inside our own minds as we try to sift through our thoughts to find the us that is doing the thinking. What happens when different parts of you have different ideas about what they want to do? And how sure can you be that you are who you think you are. Remember to collect yourself on the way out!
Week 3. The Middle Way?
Is being generous a middle way between being stingy and being extravagant? Does courage sit between the rashness of fighting a tiger with a pea shooter, and the timidity of being scared of your own shadow? The great Greek philosopher Aristotle thought that the virtues that make for a good life are a middle way between opposite vices. But is that always true? We’ll explore his ideas and other questions about what makes a wise and virtuous person.
Week 4. Everyday Metaphysics
In this session we explore the philosophical depths of everyday things from voices to Haribo. Does your voice still exist when you are silent? When you eat a tomato, do you eat its redness too? If a tree falls on a squirrel, and nobody hears it, does it make a squelch?
